Privacy and Personal Information

Clubs will invariably need to collect, store and use personal information about their members, including players. The personal information a club collects may include their members’ names, dates of birth, contact information, commentary or opinion about the person and possibly sensitive health information.  It is therefore important for a club to be aware of any privacy obligations that may apply to it.

Information from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) on which sporting clubs may be covered by the Privacy Act 1988 and how they should handle players’ health information is available here: https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/privacy-for-organisations/sporting-clubs.  The OAIC has also produced a guide to securing personal information available here: https://www.oaic.gov.au/privacy/guidance-and-advice/guide-to-securing-personal-information
