In the wake of a monumental year for Australian football with the success of the CommBank Matildas and Subway Socceroos on the world stage, now, more than ever, Australians are set to be inspired to play football.

Football Australia has launched its 2024 Play Football campaign, which aims to connect not only players of all ages and backgrounds to their local football team, but encourage coaches, referees and volunteers to join their local club.

The campaign has been launched as Australia’s football stars prepare to embark on another landmark year of football, headlined by the Subway Socceroos taking on the best teams in Asia at the AFC Asian Cup 2024, and the CommBank Matildas' quest for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics off the back of their historic performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup™.

With over one and a half million Australians involved in football across the nation, it is the number one team participation sport in the country and continues to grow. Football proudly stands as the most diverse and inclusive sport in the country, catering to all regardless of ability, age, gender, race or religion.

CommBank Matildas forward Caitlin Foord explained the impact she hoped the FIFA Women’s World Cup would have, “It was incredible to have the Women’s World Cup here in Australia and see the way Australia embraced the team and supported football during the tournament. We hope that this has empowered Australians of all ages and backgrounds to find a home with their local club and play football for many years to come.”

As the Subway Socceroos prepare for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup, winger Craig Goodwin reflected on his unique journey from grassroots football through to representing the Subway Socceroos, “Grassroots football is the lifeblood of our sport and where my love of football began. I’ve been lucky to have football provide me with so many opportunities, taking me across the world and making lifelong friends – all of which was made possible from when I first kicked a ball at my local club. I hope as many people as possible can experience the love I have for the game, so get out there and sign up to your local club!”
