What is Walking Football?

Walking Football is a small-sided, low-impact, modified version of the game, suitable for all levels of ability and fitness, from people who are returning to sport after a break or those who’ve never played before.

  • It is low-impact, team-based exercise, utilising the defined 'Walking Football Rules and Formats' specifically non-contact with the players ‘always having one foot on the ground’.
  • The program focuses on passing rather than speed/running. Matches are played with modified formats (5v5/6v6) on smaller pitches with shortened game times
  • Delivered through the Hub format, the Walking Football Program ensures the environment is inclusive, fun, engaging for both new and returning players.

Walking Football aims to provide participants physical & mental health benefits, social connectedness and promotion of the benefits of ongoing physical activity.

The national Walking Football programs are run in partnership with Active Ageing Australia and Member Federations offering a social, small-sided and sustainable version of football specifically modified for older Australians, in metropolitan, regional and remote locations.

Walking Football Covid-19 Update

Whilst isolation is important to help keep our walking Footballers safe, the social distancing and self isolation necessary at this time can be hard. For those of you who have been working up a walking sweat on football pitches and in sports centres across the Nation please do not let this fitness and vigor decrease.

To help support our Walking Football Players at this time we have created activities and exercises & online learning modules that can be done from the comfort and safety of your own home, garden or even armchair!

Exercising at home is safe and effective. The right exercises, done regularly, will prevent deterioration in mobility, balance and strength. Staying active also strengthens the body’s immune system and improves mental health and physical health more broadly.” (Active Ageing Australia)

Focus on the positives, take control of what is in your power and play Walking Football at home today, and every day!
